Diversified Energy
Digital Transformation Focused on Enhancing Scale, Security, and Standards for Operational Excellence
Diversified Energy (DEC) is an independent natural gas producer operating in Appalachia, Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. The company is partnering with Fortinet to realize a cloud-first digital transformation that will enable it to scale its systems more easily and better integrate IT, OT, and security infrastructure.
DEC uses virtual FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) to protect its cloud-based applications and its IT and OT systems, which it operates through the FortiGate Cloud management tool. Each DEC office is protected by a FortiGate NGFW, with local connectivity provided by FortiSwitch secure Ethernet switches and FortiAP access points. DEC is also in the process of rolling out the FortiNAC network access control system to improve visibility of its field assets. Through its partnership with Fortinet, DEC is delivering on its digital transformation with an IT strategy that fortifies the company’s security, drives operational resilience, and creates a data-driven culture.
“The Microsoft Azure cloud, Fortinet, and our LTE connectivity integration has allowed us to scale up quickly. Fortinet plays a significant role in our overall cloud and security strategy.”
– David Myers, EVP & CIO, Diversified Energy
Greatly improved security, due to increased visibility and ability to isolate any prospective incidents
Dramatic cost savings, as FortiGate virtual machines (VMs) and LTE modems displace MPLS connections, physical firewalls, virtual private network (VPN) hardware, and more
Cloud/network team can easily manage IT and OT environment across thousands of sites through a single pane of glass
What we were really looking for was more and more convergence to try and get both the security aspect [and] the functional aspect of the network into a single pane of glass. And Fortinet…really helped us. We have just about Forti-everything.”
- Don Aten, Enterprise Networking and Security Manager, McCombs Enterprises
The company benefits from secure remote access to its rigs and complete visibility of all associated OT systems. With logging and indicators of compromise (IOC) fully integrated with the customer’s SOC, its internal security team is much better equipped to identify and mitigate threats."
- Maritime Drilling Rig Operator
As manufacturers and other industrial producers bring together Level 3 and Level 4 networking, they gain visibility and improve efficiency in security management. They also introduce potential new threats to devices on both levels. That is a scary thought in a world where attacks targeting OT infrastructure are ever-present.”
